Chiang Mai University and Cisco Drive Digital Education in Thailand
Vision & Strategy, Public Sector, Enterprise Networking, Security
Chiang Mai, THAILAND – 12 October 2015 - Chiang Mai University (CMU), the first institute of higher education in Northern Thailand, has implemented networking and security solutions from Cisco, laying the foundation for digital education in the country. The technology upgrade to the CMU campus caters to 37,000 students and 11,300 staff across 22 faculties and reinforces their commitment and vision of becoming a fully digital university.
As institutes of higher education look for innovative approaches to differentiate their institution and attract students by incorporating technology into teaching and learning, CMU is leading the way with a 10-Gigabit Ethernet solutions and highly secure wireless access to students and staff. The pervasive and secure wireless network from 2,700 access points provides Internet speeds of up to 5 gigabits per second and can handle at least 100,000 devices. The scalability, performance and intelligent network services implemented by CMU are required to enable innovative new e-learning programs and tools at the university. This pervasive connectivity on a highly secure network also enables Bring-Your-Own-Device (BYOD) on campus so students and staff can engage in a connected (mobile) learning experience.
In addition to the network infrastructure, CMU has implemented Cisco® Security solutions for email and intrusion prevention including Cisco® Next Generation Intrusion Prevention System (NGIPS) and Cisco® Email Security that are designed to secure the content and access gateway by protecting the university from constant, dynamic, and rapidly evolving threats. Attackers today are more pervasive, persistent, and proficient than ever at evading and disrupting traditional security infrastructure. Cisco’s next-generation intrusion prevention helps provide visibility and protection across CMU’s extended network, protecting them before, during, and after an attack. The benefits of having a comprehensive advanced threat protection for the university network and the safety of their staff and students includes cost savings for hardware, energy, and reduced bandwidth losses while increasing the productivity of the Information and Technology administration.
Assoc. Prof. Dr. Thanomporn Laohajaratsang, Director of Information Technology Service Center, Chiang Mai University (CMU)
“CMU has been transforming into a Digital University starting its first phase in 2013 by improving wireless network, mobile services, smart learning & smart classroom and digital literacy. We believe that a robust core network and highly secure wireless access will enable a digital learning and teaching experience at CMU. The technologies and solutions from Cisco have enhanced our IT projects in digital learning, digital administration and digital infrastructure. We’re excited to be working with Cisco, the global networking leader, and look to moving towards a digital university in Thailand as we aim to be ranked in top 50 universities in Asia Pacific in the next five to ten years”.
Mr. Vatsun Thirapatarapong, Managing Director of Cisco in Thailand and Indochina
“There is urgency in education today, to prepare students with the skills and knowledge they need to get a good job, to be productive members of society, and ultimately to compete in today’s global economy. The learner’s world today is very different from 10 or 15 years ago, and the adoption of mobile devices and wide-spread availability of wireless networks is transforming teaching as well. As Thailand embraces the Digital Economy master plan, I’m excited to see that Chiang Mai University is leading the way in developing digital education and a digital university.”
