2016-02-15

  • Innovation Central is a Cisco-led collaboration focused on open IoT innovation.
  • Innovation Central will combine with the Centre in Perth opened in December 2015.
  • Initial focus for Sydney will be to develop IoT solutions in agriculture, where Australia has established global strengths, and in smart cities and transport, where there is significant local and global opportunity.
  • The Centre will create a state-of-the-art “connected community” focused on cloud, analytics, cyber security and IoT network platforms.
  • Cisco and its partners aim to accelerate the Australian government’s recently announced National Innovation and Science Agenda and to turn ideas into commercial reality.

SYDNEY, Australia – February 15, 2016, Cisco today announced the investment in Innovation Central Sydney, a collaboration led by Cisco, focused on open Internet of Things (IoT) innovation. The Cisco® innovation centres are aimed at inspiring and showcasing IoT innovation and development, bringing together customers, industry partners, research organisations, startups, accelerators, government and universities. The new Sydney centre will combine with Cisco’s established centre in Perth, in addition to eight other Cisco Innovation Centres in Rio de Janeiro, Toronto, Songdo, Berlin, Barcelona, Tokyo, London and Paris.

Innovation Central will be located at ATP Innovations, Australia’s leading technology incubator and community of technology entrepreneurs. The initial ecosystem partners of Innovation Central Sydney include: CSIRO’s Data61, University of New South Wales (UNSW), National Farmers’ Federation (NFF), NSW Farmers, ATP Innovations and the NSW Department of Primary Industries. The centre will also link into a hub on the campus at UNSW.

Cisco is investing US$15 million over five years to these Australian Centres, reaffirming its global pledge and ongoing commitment to generating new economic growth, through technology innovation derived from digital transformation, IoT and cyber security. With partners also making significant investments, which are expected to exceed this figure.

Cisco experts, together with industry partners and ecosystem startups, will develop proof-of-concepts, features and functionalities and do rapid prototyping. Innovation Central will incorporate dedicated space to demonstrate IoT in action and open areas where customers, startups, open communities, researchers, entrepreneurs and technology enthusiasts are afforded an environment to develop new ideas and technologies.

“Australia is a sophisticated market with a high level of innovation and is an early adopter of new technology. Australia is highly regarded globally for its resources and agriculture sectors, ensuring the nation is well-placed to serve the rapidly growing markets within Asia and the government has prioritised these sectors accordingly. We are confident that our investment, as well as that of our partners, will help to accelerate the government’s recently announced National Innovation and Science Agenda – an impressive agenda that requires industry to support collaborative innovation initiatives. The aim  of Innovation Central Sydney is to turn innovation into real commercial solutions based on IoT in agriculture, smart cities and transportation in Australia" said Ken Boal, Vice President, Cisco Australia and New Zealand.

Digitisation, data and the IoT offer unprecedented economic opportunities for the private and public sectors. McKinsey estimates that digitisation could add up to $2.2 trillion to annual GDP by 2025. According to a recent study, Australia has the advantageous position of being one of a few countries with the greatest potential to benefit from IoT, thanks to its proximity to Asia, well-trained engineers and innovation power. Cisco estimates the potential Value at Stake for the Australian economy to be more than US $74 billion over the next 10 years.

Developing a vibrant ecosystem and vertical solutions are essential building blocks to capturing the full value of IoT. Innovation Central will be a platform for technology ideas and open innovation that will help develop and test new solutions. This centre will contribute to improve business outcomes and quality of life, as well as spark a new generation of startups and jobs in Australia.

Adrian Turner, CEO, Data61 “As the leading ICT research organisation in Australia, we see our foundational partnership in Innovation Central as an opportunity to build and extend relationships in the local and global IoT ecosystem. It will also facilitate deeper collaboration and high impact outcomes with Cisco and other partners around our cyber security and data analytics research. This aligns well with Data61’s strategy of building an Applied Data Research Network to help create new technology-based industries for Australia in domains where we have competitive advantage, and cement our position as a global leader in the next wave of computing. Our strength industries are the ones that stand to benefit most from IoT.”

Professor Mark Hoffman, Dean of Engineering, UNSW "As the leading engineering institution in Australia, we know that Innovation Central – and the Cisco Innovation Hub at the UNSW campus – will strengthen linkages between industry and the research sector. It will enable Internet of Things and cyber security research to be undertaken by postgrads and undergrads that will also lead to new businesses, jobs and careers in the field.”

Simon Talbot, CEO National Farmers’ Federation “NFF is the national body representing farmers and agriculture across Australia. Australian agriculture is entering a new growth phase and is likely to generate $1.2 trillion between now and 2030, while this year alone, agriculture is predicted to reap a record farm-gate return of $57.6 billion. We need to reposition agriculture as an industry not of the past, but of the future with a flourishing culture of entrepreneurialism and innovation. Innovation Central is an ideal opportunity to accelerate the digitization of Australian agriculture and help the industry seize the vast growth opportunities before it.”

Matt Brand, CEO NSW Farmers: “NSW Farmers is a leader in digital innovation in agriculture and is driving collaborations between digital providers and producers across all sectors.  Advances in technology across sensor tech, automation, digital logistics and marketing make this an exciting time for our industry.  The IoT is critical to enabling data driven approaches to production and to optimizing sustainability, profitability and quality assurance.  Our participation in the Centre is about accelerating adoption by our members and helping to ensure that developers understand operational requirements as we seek to close the gap between farmers and their customers.  We see digital innovation as central to our competitive advantage in export markets and to authenticating the quality of Australian food and fibre products.”

Hamish Hawthorn, CEO ATP Innovations: “ATP Innovations partners with technology-based startups and entrepreneurs to help them grow, achieve success and find investment through the support of personalised assistance and mentoring. Hosting Innovation Central inside our incubator will add value to existing and future portfolio companies and provide a dynamic link between startups, industry and research that will be the first of its kind in Australia”

The Hon. Niall Blair MLC, Minister for Primary Industries, Lands and Water: “The NSW Government is determined to increase the value of primary industries and drive economic growth right across the state. In order to do this we know we need to work closely with industry and to focus on digital transformation taking place in all sectors not only in Australia but globally. Innovation Central is an ideal mechanism to drive the transformation of our Primary Industries in NSW.”
