Predictions for 2019 : The year of the boar (Inoshishi “亥”) on the road to ”2020” (4)
4. 5G Transitions
What is the 5G evolution and what does it mean to our customer and partners? 2019 will be the year of 5G trials through proof of concept and use-case development and validation. Forecasted in Cisco Visual Networking Index (Cisco VNI): forecast and trends, 2017-2022, the number of devices connected to IP networks will be more than three times the global population by 2022 (3.6 network devices per capita in 2022, up from 2.4 networked devices per capita in 2017). 5G devices and connections are expected to account for over 3 percent of global mobile devices and connections. Nearly twelve percent of global mobile traffic will be on 5G cellular connectivity by 2022. While everyone is talking about the devices, sensors, IOT, and applications for 5G, the real evolution in 5G has to happen in the SP core networking infrastructure, in Radio Area Networks and Datacenters first to achieve the full-promise of 5G: low latency and high-speed bandwidth. And, as 5G enables new services, such as autonomous vehicles, smart cities, telemedicine, workstyle innovation, factory automation, security will become fundamental to how fast we can realize the true value of 5G in accelerating digitization efforts across enterprises in Japan. 5G is here, but the journey really begins for SPs and select customer trials in 2019.
